How to Pick a Roof Color

When somebody drives past your home there are a couple of details they will notice immediately. One of those details is the color of your roof. Most people put a lot of thought into the color of their siding, the style of their front door, and what landscaping to plant around their home. The same amount of consideration should be put into choosing a roof color for your home. Community Roofing & Restoration has been installing roofs in the Milwaukee area for more than four decades. Our local residential roofing experts know what to consider when choosing a color and will help you make a decision for your next home project.

The first step is to take a look at your home’s exterior and decide what colors will complement it. If you have a brick or stone home, you might want to consider a roof color that will contrast with those materials. For example, a red brick home would look great with a black or dark gray roof. If your home has siding, you have more flexibility in choosing a roof color. A popular trend is to choose a roof color that is a few shades darker than the siding color. This creates a nice contrast and can make your home stand out.

Another factor to consider when choosing a roof color is the climate. If you live in an area with a lot of sun, you might want to choose a lighter color roof to reflect the heat. Darker colors absorb more heat, so they are not as ideal in hot climates. In Wisconsin though, a black roof can accent a house quite well as long as it is vented properly. You should also consider other climate related factors such as what kind of trees and vegetation grow in your area. Choose a roof color that will look great among the wildlife around it. If you are in a colder climate like we are in Wisconsin, keep in mind that you’ll spend half the year with little to no leaves on your trees.

Finally, take a look at your neighborhood. You can use the houses that belong to your neighbors as a reference for a look and style. It can be helpful for seeing what a roof color will look like in a read world setting and on a larger scale. But use your neighbors for reference only. The choice is ultimately yours and the colors of your home should be your primary factor to consider when choosing a roof color. Make sure it is a color you’ll love for years to come.

Based on recent projects that Community Roofing & Restoration has worked on, we are currently seeing weather wood, drift wood, and moire black as the most popular roof colors in the Milwaukee area.

With these tips in mind, you should be able to find the perfect roof color for your home.
